Casino games cost money over time by design. These are the controls every UK-licensed site must give you, and the people to call if the controls aren't enough.

Start with one honest premise

Every game reviewed on this site carries a house edge, which means the expected long-run result of playing is a loss. Gambling can still be worthwhile the way cinema tickets are worthwhile — paid entertainment — but it cannot be a plan for making money, and any site or person telling you otherwise is selling something. Decide what an evening's entertainment is worth to you before you deposit, and let that number, not the session, make the decisions.

Tools built into every licensed casino

  • Deposit limits. A daily, weekly or monthly cap on what you can pay in. Set it at registration, when your judgement is coolest. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately at UK sites; raising one is deliberately delayed.
  • Time-outs. A short break — typically 24 hours to six weeks — during which you can't log in. Useful the moment you notice you're chasing a loss.
  • Reality checks. On-screen reminders showing how long you've played and your net position. Turn them on; sessions feel shorter than they are.
  • Self-exclusion with the operator. A longer lock, minimum six months, that the operator must enforce, including keeping you off its marketing lists.
  • Account history. Every licensed site must show your full deposit and play history. Reading a month of it plainly is the fastest self-assessment there is.

GamStop: one registration, every site

GamStop is the national online self-exclusion scheme, free at gamstop.co.uk. Register once with your details and every gambling site licensed for Great Britain — including all five we review — must block your accounts and refuse new ones for the period you pick: six months, one year or five years. It takes about ten minutes and doesn't require explaining yourself to anyone. Pair it with blocking software such as Gamban or your bank's gambling-block feature (most major UK banks now offer one in-app) and the barrier becomes genuinely hard to climb over on impulse.

Signs worth taking seriously

Not a diagnosis — just patterns that people who work in gambling support hear constantly: betting more to feel the same interest, hiding play or its cost from people close to you, gambling to pay for gambling, topping up "one more time" after a stop-loss, and irritability on days without play. One of these is a reason to set stricter limits. Several are a reason to make a phone call — and the call is easier than most people expect.

Free, confidential help

  • National Gambling Helpline (GamCare) — 0808 8020 133, free from UK phones, open 24 hours every day. Advisers, live chat and local treatment routes at gamcare.org.uk.
  • GambleAware — self-assessment tools and treatment finders at gambleaware.org.
  • NHS specialist clinics — referral routes for gambling-related harm run through the National Gambling Helpline above or your GP.
  • GamStop — the self-exclusion scheme itself, at gamstop.co.uk.

If someone close to you is the one struggling, GamCare's helpline supports affected family members too — you don't need the player's permission to call.
